## **Welcome to the Plutus Pioneers Program**

The Plutus Pioneer Program (PPP) is a course the IOG Education Team provides to recruit and train software developers in Plutus, the native smart contract language for the Cardano ecosystem.

People who join this program will become part of a learning community with access to courses that teach them the core principles of how to code in Plutus. In addition, this program is highly interactive, with weekly lessons, exercises, live Q&A sessions, and exclusive access to the creators and key experts in Plutus and Cardano.

**Prior Experience Required**

This program is intended for people with coding experience in any programming language. While you do not need to be an expert in formal methods, programming experience and a general aptitude for logical and mathematical thinking are highly desirable. Some prior knowledge of Haskell or functional programming is also recommended.

This program involves approximately ten hours a week of your time and efforts for ten weeks. It covers the building blocks of Plutus, including:

- Setting your Development Environment
- Introduction to the ecosystem and Theoretical Foundations
- Introduction to PlutusTx and Cardano-cli
- Parameterized Validators
- Native tokens, NFTs, and Minting
- Off-chain code
- Testing Plutus smart contracts
- Working with Marlowe and Plutus
- Staking.
- Interoperability of Cardano with Sidechains

## **Learn Haskell**

Haskell is a purely functional, statically typed, and lazy programming language. It has a robust, static type system with type inference and supports higher-order programming and pattern matching. Haskell also has a wide range of libraries, making it an excellent choice for developing reliable, robust, and efficient applications. In addition, Haskell is an open source language and provides a platform for experimenting with functional programming.

As Plutus is mainly based on Haskell, having some prior experience with Haskell (or another functional programming language) will be very helpful for this program.

If you want to start learning Haskell in advance of the Plutus Pioneers Program, we provide a self-paced Haskell Bootcamp course introducing you to Haskell. To take this course, you should have programming experience and a mathematical and technical mindset.

For every lesson on this Bootcamp, we provide:

- A video lecture
- An interactive coding environment based on Jupyter notebooks
- Homework assignments to put your new Haskell skills into action

## **Working Environment Set Up**

To follow up on this program's activities, you should set up your working environment to start successfully since the first lesson.

In this program, you'll extensively use Plutus to create Cardano applications. You can use a web development environment like [demeter.run](https://demeter.run/) or set up a local working environment on your computer.

The web development environment allows you to create a Cardano application from your browser, and no further installations are required. This is a suitable option if you have a reliable internet connection.

To set up a local environment, we provide a Docker container image that will install all the required libraries and dependencies. We recommend this option if your internet connection speed is lower than 10 Mbit/s.

We provide detailed instructions to set up your working environment in the following guides:

## **Using Demeter**

[Demeter.run](https://demeter.run/) is a cloud environment that provides all the tools required for building and deploying Cardano applications. Follow the steps below to set up an account and use this development environment.

**Prerequisites**

To use demeter.run, you need a web browser on any operating system and internet access. This guide provides screenshots of using Google Chrome.

Setup a demeter.run account
Please go through the following instructions to set up an account and start using demeter.run.

2. On the demeter.run home page, click on the "Login" option on the top navigation menu, as seen in the image below.

3. Next, you need to set up an account to sign in demeter.run. As it's shown in the image below, you can choose to set a username and password, or you can sign in by using your Google or GitHub account. Select the method that best fits your preferences to continue.

4. After signing in, you're ready to use demeter.run. As the image below shows, you'll see the "Projects" page.

Create a demeter.run project

After setting up your account, you are ready to start building a Cardano application on demeter.run. To do so, follow the instructions below to create a new project.

1. On the "Project" page, click on the "NEW PROJECT" button, as seen in the image below.

2. Next, you'll need to follow the required steps to set up a new project. First, you need to choose an organization where your project will reside. By default, an organization with your username exists. We'll select the default organization for this demo, as shown in the image below, where the username is jarturomora. After choosing the organization, click on the "NEXT" button.

3. In the second step, you need to choose the location of the cluster that you'll use. As for now, only a US-based cluster exists. So, select the "US Central" cluster and click the "NEXT" button to continue, as the image below shows.

4. After choosing a cluster, the next step is to select a plan. For the purpose of the program, we will use the "Discover" plan that is available free of charge. So, select the "Discover" plan and click on the "NEXT" button to continue, as the image below shows.

5. Next, you need to choose a network for your project. For testing purposes, we'll typically use the "Preview" networks. Select the "Preview" network and click the "NEXT" button to continue, as the image below shows.

6. The last step is to provide a name for your project. Also, in this step, you can review the project's details; be aware that you can have only one project in the Discover plan. In this demo, the project was named "PPP Demo." So, set a name for your project and click on the "CREATE PROJECT" button to finish, as the image below shows.

7. Once your project is created, it's ready to start building applications. You'll see a confirmation message, as the image below shows. Next, you can click the "OPEN" button to navigate the project's "Development Console."
